All great things start from a small idea. I think something like that is a saying or a maxim or whatever. But we, the Chows, believe that all fun things stem from a whim or a trip that is unplanned.

So Anoop, Karthik, S, Nafisa and I got into Anoop’s trusted Knight Rider at about 4:30 in the morning and we were off. It all started a couple of days before that when Renie asked if we would like to drive down to Chennai. And of course, Anoop said yes and then informed me. Hehehehe. That’s how it works you see.

We were all so happy and excited that we forgot about the turn at Krishnagiri and went straight towards Salem. We realized the mistake after 45 kms and then we had to turn back. About an hour or so was lost. We felt a little bad since we were actually making very good time at a steady speed, thanks to Shell’s Super Petrol.

Once we reached Chennai and Renie’s house, the sea, we relaxed (you know what) and contemplated what to do in the evening. We, the chows, and Nafisa were ready for anything. But apparently S had come down with some grand plans of clubbing and night life of Chennai. So she wanted to go to Temple Bay. No amount of coaxing for a relaxed evening convinced her. Since she was the new one in the group (at least for Renie), we decided to go. After a brief sleep and rest we took off in the evening towards East Coast Road.

Temple bay was seriously good though. It was a peaceful environment by the beach with subdued lightning. I am sure we got cursed by all and sundry for making a lot of noise. One sample pic below.

Then we went back to Renie’s place for some quiet time of “memory game”. I won’t go into details too much except for the facts that S got conned into not sleeping early (as usual of course, we are really good at this) and that I started snoring in the wee hours that everyone went to sleep.

The next day we went to Kafeoke, a Karaoke coffee bar, by the beach side. We had loads of fun there singing to a lot of memorable songs. Anoop started off with Call Me, by Blondie. We literally scared a lot of people who were there. Then I sang Cocaine by Eric Clapton and got the highest point for the evening - fifty something. My bro, Edin, did a couple of songs - Crazy from Aerosmith and Light my fire from Doors. The girls did an awesome song from some Hindi movie which was quite entertaining. Below pic is when we finished with a song on the house, with a photoshoot by a photographer for a local weekly newspaper.
And then, I bombed trying to sing Creep by Radiohead. It was so bad that Nafisa

And then it was time for all of us to leave. So we were back Sunday night at our respective places. Thanks Renie for a wonderful time! Remember, that was not an invasion but the start of a series of raids. Hehehehe!

My love affair with cobras continue. The cobras are my all time favorite reptiles. I have always been fascinated with them from childhood. I am sure the stories my dad narrated to me as a child helped a lot. He used to talk about my granddad's encounters with the cobras over the years. It so happens that my granddad used to be a small game hunter and so I used to love his adventure stories.

So when I read about the new African species of spitting cobras, I was quite interested.

The newly anointed Ashe's spitting cobra, or large brown spitting cobra (Naja ashei), can reach lengths of more than 9 feet (274 centimeters) and is believed to deliver more venom with a single bite than any other cobra on the planet.

The aggressive reptile was previously identified as a brown-colored variant of the black-necked spitting cobra, though researchers had long suspected that it merited its own species. Now blood and tissue analysis have confirmed this theory to be true.

The snake dwells in the dry lowlands of north and east Kenya, as well as in Uganda and Ethiopia.

Of course, King Cobra is the longest of all venomous snakes with lengths up to 18.5 ft (5.7 m), but it is not part of the cobra family.

This is a short story of our trip to Korea. This is but part 1.

So we were at Incheon airport, South Korea. Everybody else is out through immigration. Now its time for yours truly to get visa stamped. So I go to the counter and give my passport and boarding ticket to the lady. She looks at me up and down. And i am looking practically devilish with a four day's growth of stubble (it was almost a beard) on my face. She sees the passport. Back to my face. And this being my very first trip abroad. What a dumb thing to do, huh? So she asks me a couple of questions of why, what, when and where. And then, horror of all horrors, I am sent to this 'special room' without my visa getting stamped.

I go there and see a lot of people sitting around. And there one more lady asks for the invitation letter. Of course, I don't have it. But luckily I have my laptop with me which has a copy of the invitation sent to me. So I open the laptop and show the letter to the lady there (immigration officer?). And then pro actively I give the name of our Business partner's name and number to her and explain how important it is for me to be in Seoul for the next few days.

I was told to sit in one of the numerous chairs there. She keeps speaking Korean to this guy and that guy here and there. I don't understand anything. As I was sitting there I saw so many people being brought here for the same reason as I was. That was funny. Hehehehe. All I knew was that they cannot reject my visa on my birthday. I know how illogical that sounds. But that was what running through my mind anyway. I casually walk towards the door and see both Senthil and Anoop looking at me from afar with serious eyes. I wave and smile with what I assumed was a confident smile (I hope).

And then this female is speaking to someone on the phone. I heard one word that was meaningful to me and that was the name of the company we were visiting. So I assumed she was speaking to someone to verify the company. Anyway, after half an hour or so she stamped something and asked me to come with her. I open the passport and find that YES, I am finally in Seoul.

So we take all our bags and go out where I find Mr. Kim running towards me and shouting my name. That was just wonderful. Only then we come to know that it was he who the lady was speaking to on the phone.

That was a one hell of an entry into a foreign land on my very first abroad trip. Unforgettable!!!

Elevator Fiasco

First, Gayathri posted about access to office problem. I had a good laugh and its safe (I think) to say, at her expense.

I Never Ever thought it could happen to me.

Well, I was engrossed in my own thoughts and feeling so sad that it was Monday and there I was walking towards the elevator. One part of me was saying, "its only office dude, you are not walking towards deathrow". I got into the elevator and got out first along with another middle-aged guy.

I was shocked to see the whole floor in shambles. I thought maybe they were arranging stuff or whatever. A sudden thought made me look at the floor number. I was on the first floor when mine was at 2nd floor. Ok no issues I thought and went back to the elevators and punched in the upward button. What? The buttons were not working!!!

Oh shit!!! No amount of pressure and haggling got the buttons to work. So I thought I will take the stairs. And what do you know? Anwin was on a roll. The goddamned staircase was friggin' locked. For God's sakes, it was bloody locked.

I went nuts trying to figure out what to do. I noticed this freight elevator and felt a weight off my back. And as usual the Anwin luck was on full force. IT DID NOT BLOODY WORK EITHER. There were other people (all of them were workers, carpenters and the like) who were waiting for the freight elevator too. Someone went to call the security guys to start the freight elevator.

And then, an idea struck me. I called Pal asking him if he was in office. No luck. I call Ammu, her number was not reachable. Tried calling Santhosh, not reachable again. What else to do? I called Srini, my manager, and told him that I was stuck in the first floor. He called Santhosh at office and advised him to come to first floor to pick me up (you see, since the first floor was not yet done yet, the elevator does not stop at 1st floor. And on the first occasion, it stopped at 1st floor, I had to get out and get stuck. Basically, you can come to first floor from any other floor but you can't use the same elevator from first floor. Except for the freight elevator).

Anyway, just when Santhosh was going to pick me up the freight elevator worked and I got back to my correct floor.

Weekend gone Weekstart begun

Boo hoo hoo. It's Monday again. And back to work. Boo hoo hoo.

Anyway, weekend was fun. Tried some home-made shooters. Anoop gave a name to the shooter - Armageddon. Basically we tried different combinations of Brandy, Bailey's and Sheridan's. And they were bloody awesome. Naveen took some great photographs of the shooters. Will post them soon enough.

And Styx was great, apart from waiting hours for the beer to arrive, after a very long time. Hadn't been to Styx for ages. (It was SUPPOSED to be our fav haunt before).

And I look forward to Friday. My extended weekend as opposed to Gayathri's extended weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sundaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiii.

Scoop of the Month - Karthik's Marriage

So this week a rumour got floated around that Karthik is getting married this Sunday (tomorrow). I didn't think much of it because this happens in our office now and then. You can't move 5 minutes away from your computer without unlocking without getting married or worse. Someone near you is bound to send a quick email from your computer to all and sundry proclaiming marriage, etc...

Well, so as usual I just left it off...until this girl who works with me asked me with great surprise if Karthik is really getting married. Of course, I said yes. I always say yes to stupid questions.

Anyway, here goes the conversation:

She: Anwin, Karthik is getting married?
Me: Yeah, that's correct.
She: Really??? Don't lie to me.
Me: Really. Why would I ever lie about something as sacred (snicker to myself) as marraige.
She: Oh my God. I never thought he would get married so soon.
Me: Why ever not?
She: No, just like that. I never thought he will get married at a young age. But why tomorrow and all of a sudden?
Me: (This is the first time I come to know that the proposed date was for tomorrow. And I was on a call at that moment. So I mimed that it was going to be a register marriage)
She: What?
Me: (Miming that I will speak after the call)

After the call:

Me: He didn't want eanyone to know about his marriage since it is going to be a register marriage.
She: (Her mouth a perfect big O )What??? Really?? Oh My GOOOOOOD. So that's why he never invited anyone to his marriage.
Me: Yeah.
She: So you are going as witness?
Me: Yeah. Naveen, myself and another friend of mine (Anoop, obviously) are going by car with Karthik. She is coming with a couple of her friends by bike. We are meeting at the registrar's office.

Now I am really rocking and my mind works faster than a cannonball(ok , that was corny, and from the song by Oasis).

Me: Yeah, the problem is that she is a Muslim girl by name Begum something or the other. That's why this hullaballoo..
She: Oh... this is interesting.

And issue not taken up for another hour. And just now when I am leaving she asks me...

She: So is Karthik giving a party tonight or tomorrow?
Me: I don't know. Ask him
She: You have to know. You are the star witness.
Me: No, for yourself you will have to ask him direct.
She: I never expected this from Karthik.

We've had many laughs about Anoop's bathing habits. Yesterday when I went in to take a shower, just after Anoop's shower, to find water all over the bathroom walls. Mind you, not the floor, but the walls.

So I wondered what he does when he goes in for a shower. Probably as follows:

Fill the bucket with water. Maybe even turn on the shower for good measure.
Fill mug with water and pour it on the west wall.
Fill mug and pour it on the east wall.
Fill mug and pour it on the south wall.
Fill mug and pour it on the north wall.
Fill mug and pour it on the ceiling.
Sprinkle water on head.
Wash face with "Fem" liquid soap.
Dry with towel.

And lo! Anoop has taken a bath.

Freedom Curbed, Freedom Jammed

Went to Freedom Jam on saturday night with Naveen, Anoop, Mahesh and met Pochie, Siva and Thenraj. Had a good time. Not the best, I tell you, but ok. Not bad.

Enjoyed some good bands, some ok bands and some worst ones. But hey, live and let live. You can't expect only the good bands to play.

Got lost twice in the crowd.

Got bombed and smashed. Felt like I was playing on the stage most of the times. AND I LOVED IT. EVERY FRIGGING SECOND.

But I hated not able to party all night with rock/metal music. Freedom Jam was no longer about freedom but about Communist tactics of curfew. Bleh!!!

The rest of the weekend was spent penniless and quietly.

So much hype and so much trite. Yeah, I said it. That's what this damn movie was - trite.

So much bullshit everywhere on the internet flying around praising??? the movie. To tell you the truth, let me put down the "salient" points.
1) A mediocre movie at the best
2) The cinematography was poor
3) There were too many songs and at the most inappropriate moments. (How do you like a song that pops out from nowhere during a particularly serious scene.)
4) The story line sucked big time with no real hold at all.
5) Aamir Khan could have done better.

Another birthday

Saturday evening. No ideas on what the hell to do or how to spend the weekend. Naveen and I, two lost buggers. Vague plans of Sanjeeb and Karthik coming to our place to a quiet weekend watching only movies (I did not cross my fingers).

And out of the blue, Siva a long lost thrice removed friend of ours gives a call to Naveen and we all end up at a local place of worship. Had some serious talks and pokes. And I have to say this - Siva is a racist. I am not going into the details here as it may be offensive to some. Siva was with another friend - who turned out to be pochi who we have vaguely heard about.

Turned out that it was Siva's birthday that night. So nice cake and Naveen some photographs soon.

Ah...it was a rave party in the end.

And I choose to stop myself from saying more.

Birthday of a Madman

Yesterday was Naveen's birthday.

And as usual I completely forgot all about his birthday. I did exchange a few words with him in the morning before coming to work. But, the birthday part missed my mind. So I came to work and started working. Then I noticed the date. Oh, F#$%, August 17, Naveen's birthday.

No panic, no issues. I called Anoop and we both conspired. So we came up with this plan - We get him some gift, (we are great admirers of the the thought "Its the thought that counts"), then we hide it somewhere at home and organize a treasure hunt for the birthday boy. Oh sorry! The birthday old man. The bad bad mad man. That's Naveen, of course.

Some hundred surreptious telephone calls later I find out that Anoop has failed to get the gift. Oh shit! Anyway we get home and organize the treasure hunt anyway, without the gift. As I pointed out earlier, its the thought that counts. Halfway through we realize that there's no food at home. So we rush the clues and everything and get the car to buy some food. We just make it back home before Naveen comes back from work. Then we realize that the last clue, which points out to Naveen's Marilyn Manson T-Shirt, is absolete. For the simple reason that we cannot find the damned T-shirt. And we can hear Naveen walking up the stairs. With just seconds to spare we put some money inside one his Maiden T-shirts and also re-write the last clue.

Naveen is dumbfounded looking at the door. I forgot to mention before, this post's title was actually pasted on the door - "Birthday of a Madman". And the side caption reads " 'Appy Birthdai Pyro' " with a birthday cake and 26 candles drawn around it. And of course, the first clue to the endless other clues. (The clues in my next post, sorry, but this post is getting too long).

And 10 clues later (some really great clues and hiding places ), he gets a cash gift for his birthday. How cool is that? Just imagine you get money to spend on your birthday.

According to Blondie (a colleague and friend of mine), I have all the symptoms of being in love. The symptoms? Here they are and pointed out as she told me.

1) I look happy for some days now.
2) I sing to myself almost all the time.
3) I am getting forgetful for some days now.
4) I try to do something new every week (like keeping a new style of mush or beard).

And she claims to be an expert on love.

My answer is here as follows:

1) I am not happy. I am just optimistic and will not bow down to all my troubles.
2) Again, I try to fight all my troubles with a song.
3) Yes, I am. Maybe the optimistic bit is not working too much.
4) Just another ploy to show I care about myself.

And now the truth.

I am contemplating suicide.

Even though my blog is pretty much overcrowded, I am not able to resist myself to not add more stuff to it. In the last week I have added blogger comments along with haloscan comments, put up a tag board, added my blogroll and added a birthday calendar for my reference (see my previous post).

The Birthday reminder (calendar) is not perfect as any one can see. But I am working on it. Just waiting for busybody Renie to tell me how to host my own server side applications on my server so I can write my own scripts for reminders or whatever.

First, I have always had a bad memory, especially of dates.

Some years back I completely forgot my x's birthday and wished her a very happy birthday the next day. I truly believed that her birthday was that day not realizing it was the day before. This small example should show how bad I was with dates.

Now to the main part of the story. Every year, I have to be reminded of my family memebers' birthday and anniverseries etc. My brother calls me to remind dad or mom's b'day or marriage anniveresary. Mom calls me to remind me of brother's b'day and so on. And even then I tend to forget when THE EXACT day comes.

This is every man's nightmare and I am sure this is an age old issue. Maybe I need a new PDA. :) . I would love one anyway. Mom, Dad can you hear me. If I get a PDA I will never ever forget your b'days or anniversaries or anything. I swear!!!

I did call mom on her b'day last week without realising that it was her b'day. After about 10 minutes of conversation mom blurted out, "So you are not calling because its my b'day today?". Aaahaa...it was a revelation to me, I say.

This one goes for "Another A" in our gang. This has always been trying to get out of India on business trips thru his company. Okay, some say luck is a lady. I believe it cos he has the damnedest luck trying to get his visa stamped. He practically gets thrown out of every embassy. I've always adviced him to use a good deo before going in. Maybe he doesn't listen to my advise. Anyway, bye bye USA. Then bye bye UK. Again bye bye USA. And again bye bye UK. And bye bye UK. And then bye bye Canada. And at last, he confides that it was lady luck alright.

He got his visa stamped today. And yeah, you guessed it right. It was stamped by a lady today when all his other interviewers were men.

Religious Mania

I've always been a person who hates to be nice to people who miss out the whole point of nice. Ok...I don't know what that sentence mean. One of the breed of people who always make me mad are the so called God-men who turn out to be bad seeds or just plain stupid. Religion was obviously invented by man. If it wasn't so and REALLY was invented by God there should have been only one religion in the whole world. If language was invented by man and man has come up with thousands of languages, its obviously simple that religion was also invented by Man.

We'll talk about that later. Maybe someday everyone will understand.

I absolutely HATE self-righteous religious people. I don't consider them as people but as senseless Demons in the guise of men or women for that matter. Every religion preaches love and not hate. But the demons in human clothing cannot stand this, I suppose. Take a look at this piece of news. Is it justified to murder or even inflict pain and suffering to another human being in the name of GOD? A question that may have a plentiful answers but should actually have only one answer.

No.

Not in the name of God or man or the devil. You are NOT entitled to kill another human being. There can be exceptions, of course, which I am not about to talk now.

I always would vote for Ozzy, when push comes to shove. But individually I don't mind Manson but Ozzy ROCKS.

Just another manic friday

Might seem incredible and stupid to most people. But then most people don't expect to come to work on a bleeding saturday. So my motto is "I love Mondays". Yes, its true. I love mondays because no one's sure what to do or how to work on monday. But as the week moves on everybody becomes smart,everyone thinks they are the smarter thab the other and everything gets muddled and confused. So I hate fridays, especially with the haphazard work you do at the office and with the dread of coming back to work on saturday.

Lord will you find me a mercedex benz?
Lord I need to drive away...somewhere...that is not here.

As the Chinese say - "May you all have interesting things come your way".

And for the people who don't know the meaning of the saying, here goes. It is not so innocuous as it seems to be on the surface, but a curse. Just think deep. Do you want your life to be really interesting with things happening around you all the time? Think carefully and leave a comment.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. David Ameeraly. did not declare any next of kin or relations in all his official documents, including his bank deposit paperwork in my bank. This sum of US$16,500,000.00 and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it According to UNITTED ARAB EMIRATES LAW, at the expiration of (seven) years; the money will revert to the ownership of the UNITTED ARAB EMIRATES Government if nobody applies to claim the fund.

A mini story with a question

So you are standing oh so lonely down the lonely road waiting for the bus. You just want to go home and as usual the bus runs late and your luck runs bad. And to top it all, it starts raining and you can find no shelter around. As usual when it rains you don't have your beautiful yellow umbrella with you. Only then do you notice this beautiful woman standing behind you and to your sides. She is leaning so close to the hedges that you have missed her until now.

She gives you a shy smile and looks away. You heart does not skip a beat - because it misses a whole set of beats. You pull in your stomach and push out your chest and try to look heroic with the rain battering your face. Then you take the file you've been trying hard not to get wet and walk towards her. You hold the file above her head to try and give some relief to her from the rain.

And then she really smiles and shows her white teeth which glimmer in the faint street light. You both get talking...
